Nano’s US version to have bigger engine: Ratan Tata
Auto companies are vying for attention at the Delhi Auto Expo, which started today. Tata Motors launched 3 cars, a 7-seater passenger car called Tata Aria, a multi-purpose vehicle called Tata Venture, and another vehicle named Magic Iris. Tata Motors will also launch a Jaguar model at the show.
While speaking at the event, Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, said that the auto major will launch a bigger engine for the US version of the Nano in three years. He added that all all efforts were being made to enhance the Nano manufacturing capacity. He also said that while there were not plans to return to Singur, the company may consider it if there was harmony. When asked about Nano’s future price trend, he refused to comment.
On the company’s acquisition scene, Tata rubbished rumours of the company buying Fiat’s Sicily units. But he defended the company’s other buy, JLR and said that the overseas buyouts were not for short-term gains. “We made overseas buys due to strategic value.”
He hopes Jaguar will once again attain eminent position. “We have found enormous skills in Jaguar, Land Rover and have got more than anticipated from the acquisition.”
When asked to comment on whether the market would be able to digest so many of its new offerings, Tata said, “”We have new products that you say are so many but that is mainly because we are a relatively new company trying to position ourselves with products in as many segments as we see have potential.”
He said that volumes from an Indian company are much less than anything that is seen from international companies, adding that there is a there is a large market in India. He added, “We feel confident in what we have to address those markets and judging from the participation in this show other car companies feel the same way.”
